February Update
We should have an interesting monthly meeting this month on February 28 at 8:00pm at the LGBT Center, 208 W. 13th St. between 7th and Greenwich Aves. Not only will we have Council Member David Weprin, who is one of the top fundraisers for a possible '09 city-wide run, but we will be having a Mini-Forum for the soon-to-be-open NY Assembly Seat currently held by Pete Grannis--the known potential candidates have all been invited to speak, several have confirmed that they are coming, and we are likely to be making an endorsement. We will also have a short presentation from the LGBT Unit of the Community Affairs Division of the NYPD.
If you want to vote in the endorsement for the Pete Grannis Assembly Seat and you were a dues paid member last year, you must pay your dues by the time of the meeting to vote. So if you haven't renewed already, please bring a check or pay online.
Our monthly social, Drinking Liberally Steps Out, is next Tuesday, February 20th from 7-10pm at XES Lounge 157 W 24th Street (between 6th & 7th Aves.). As always, drinks are 2-for-1 until 9:00. Please come out for some conversation and cocktails.
Finally, we are co-sponsoring with City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and numerous other groups in the City of a reading and discussion with our Senior Senator Chuck Schumer of his new book on Wednesday, February 21st at 7:30PM. The invitation follows after the jump. Our sponsorship of this event does not mean we endorse all his positions on LGBT issues.
I hope to see you this month.

Letter from the President 2007

Welcome to the Stonewall Democratic Club's Website. We are entering our 21st Year as the Citywide voice for LGBT Democrats in New York City.
2007 will be an unusual year for New York politics. Aside from a few vacancies being filled and judicial races, there are no elections this year. This begs the question of what does a group that in large part endorses and works for the election of candidates good on LGBT issues do in such a year?
Well, there is still a lot to do. With Governor Eliot Spitzer's pledge to pass same-sex civil marriage in New York, we have a Republican controlled Senate and an Assembly who is not as progressive as it could be, despite being overwhelmingly Democratic, to influence. We can and will do everything we can to make same-sex civil marriage a reality in this state.
In addition we have other legislative priorities—the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), the Dignity for All Students Bill, which would protect LGBT Youth in our schools and a bill which would ban the so-called "Gay Panic Defense" used by gay bashers to excuse their horrible acts. We will be working to get all these bills passed and others of importance to our community.
What else can we do in a non-election year? Have fun. The Club sponsors "Drinking Liberally Steps Out" a monthly social gathering at XES Longue on the third Tuesday of the Month and we will be sponsoring Forums on various issues throughout the year. We will march in the City's various LGBT Pride Parades, as well and host or co-sponsor other social events. In addition, I pledge that our monthly meetings will end early enough for social time.
Finally, we can look back on 2003 for a preview of what happens in pre-Presidential Election years. In that year Stonewall was the first club in the state to endorse the inspiring candidacy of Howard Dean.
This year we will no doubt be considering whom to support for the nomination in 2008 (I hear one of our Senators may be running).
I hope you will continue to participate in our Club or join us this year.

Paint NY BLUE!!!
Stonewall Democrats of NYC have committed to doing a bus campaign, sending volunteers out every Saturday and Sunday from the primary to the general election to help in contested State Senate races (within a reasonable distance of NYC). The races in which we intend to intervene and to which we hope to provide bus trips are Brian Keeler (41st District), Susan Zimet (42nd District), the Trunzo seat (once the primary is over - District 3), the Matt Titone campaign for the Marchi seat (District 24 - Staten Island), Andrea Stewart-Cousins in District 35) and Brooke Ellison (District 2 - the Flanagan seat).
The bus schedule is here and hope to partner with as many Democratic clubs and elected officials in the city as possible. Please email me at mcdirk@gmail.com for more information.
Thanks!
