Dear Friends:

Please mark your calendar for Thursday, May 15, 2008 for the Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City’s 22nd Anniversary Celebration. As you know, last year the New York State Assembly historically passed the same-sex marriage bill. As our attention now turns to the State Senate, this year we are honoring the heroic Democratic Senators from New York City who are sponsors of the same sex marriage bill. We want to publicly thank these Senators for their loyalty, friendship and dedication to the LGBT Community—They have been there for us and we want to be there for them. We are hopeful that after this year’s election we will have a Democratic majority in the Senate and enough votes to pass the bill for Governor Paterson’s signature.

This year we are having another one of our legendary cocktail party receptions, with top-shelf open bar, lots of food and a very few speeches, at Hill Country, 30 West 26th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues), Manhattan, from 6:00 – 8:30 P.M. Our honorees this year are:

Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith (Queens);

Senator Eric Adams (Brooklyn);

Senator Martin Connor (Manhattan & Brooklyn);

Senator Martin Malave Dilan (Brooklyn);

Senator Tom Duane (Manhattan);

Senator Liz Krueger Manhattan);

Senator Velmanette Montgomery (Brooklyn);

Senator Kevin Parker (Brooklyn);

Senator Bill Perkins (Manhattan);

Senator John Sabini  (Queens);

Senator Diane Savino (Staten Island & Brooklyn);

Senator Eric Schneiderman (Manhattan & The Bronx);

Senator Jose M. Serrano (The Bronx & Manhattan); and

Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (Queens).

We hope that you will join us at the event as a Benefactor ($500), Patron ($250) or Sponsor ($175). If you do, your name will be included in our invitation and program. (Regular tickets are $125.) As you know from our last several events, this party will be a blast and will be attended by all the movers and shakers in LGBT politics and our straight allies. Your kind contributions will help us to support our candidates and to continue our fight for full equality.

Please either print this email and fill out the coupon below and mail it with your check or money order (if you want to be listed in the invitation, please send it by no later than Monday, April 14th) or pay online either with the following links or on our website: www.sdnyc.org.

BENEFACTOR ($500)

PATRON ($250)

SPONSOR ($175)

     For more information, you may contact Matthew Carlin at mcarlin@sdnyc.org or 917-292-4619. We are entering our 22nd Year as the Citywide voice for LGBT Democrats in New York City.

I don’t have to tell you how important this year is. In addition to electing a Democrat to the Presidency and increasing our majorities in both houses, we are going to actively participate in taking the New York Senate for the Democrats. We have a lot of exciting meetings planned as we talk about participating in the elections, as well as gear up for yet another important year, when we will elect a new Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate and a majority of the City Council. Stonewall will doubtlessly be courted by many contenders in those elections, which should make for some spirited meetings. We also planning to hear from some of the greatest political consultants in the business.
There are also a lot of other things to do. The same-sex civil marriage bill finally passed the Assembly this, year, but we still have work to do to get it passed. A huge priority is to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) as well as the Dignity for All Students Bill, which would protect LGBT Youth in our schools; we are also working on a bill which would ban the so-called "Gay Panic Defense" used by gay bashers to excuse their horrible acts. We will be working to get all these bills passed and others of importance to our community.

We will also be having fun. The Club sponsors "Drinking Liberally Steps Out" a monthly social gathering at XES Longue on the third Tuesday of the Month and we will be sponsoring Forums on various issues throughout the year. We will march in the City's various LGBT Pride Parades, as well and host or co-sponsor other social events. In addition, I pledged last year and kept my word at all but one meeting that our monthly meetings will end early enough for social time.

I hope you will continue to participate in our Club or join us this year.

—Matthew Carlin, President SDNYC

RESOLUTION by the board members of the Stonewall Democratic Club of
New York City (SDNYC), the Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn
(LID), the Gay and
Lesbian Independent Democrats (GLID), the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club (JOLDC) and Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club of Queens (LGDCQ) support of the federal ENDA and
its original transgender inclusive language, and opposition to
statements by Congressman Barney Frank on the exclusion of
transgender people.

Whereas, lesbians and gay men have been seeking federal protections
from discrimination in the workplace for over 33 years; and

Whereas, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), originally introduced in 1996, is a proposed federal law that would prohibit
discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation;
and

Whereas, the bill has had little movement since then, although local
and state governments throughout the country have increasingly passed
laws which give some protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender persons; and

Whereas, language for gender identity and gender expression, which
would include transgender people, had been added to ENDA in 2004; and

Whereas, New York State regrettably passed (with the urging of
lesbians and gay men) the Sexual Orientation Non Discrimination Act
(SONDA) in 2002 without transgender inclusion; and

Whereas, transgender New Yorkers statewide are still awaiting
protections from discriminations that would have been covered in
SONDA; and

Whereas, in New York State, the Jewish, African-American, Asian-
American and disabled communities waited eleven years for passage of
the NYS Hate Crimes bill, based on principle, that it included sexual
orientation language; and

Whereas, all major organizations are opposed to both the change in
language, and bringing the bill to a vote with these changes,
including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), the
National Stonewall Democrats (NSD), Lambda Legal Education and
Defense Fund, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), the
National Center for Transgender Equality, the Empire State Pride
Agenda (ESPA) and AFL-CIO Pride At Work; and

Whereas, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) originally issued a
statement that while it prefers inclusive language for transgender
people, it would not oppose a vote with exclusive language, although
it now appears to support a delay in voting on the non-inclusive
version of the bill; and

Whereas, Congressman Barney Frank believes there are not enough votes
in Congress to support keeping transgender inclusive language in ENDA
and has proposed a revised bill that would exclude gender identity
and expression, which would, in effect, exclude transgender people:
and

Whereas, Congressman Frank and the HRC speak only for themselves and
not the entire LGBT community in rushing passage of this bill without
transgender inclusive language. In fact, openly lesbian Congresswoman
Tammy Baldwin removed her name from the bill; and

Whereas, the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a Hate
Crimes bill with transgender inclusive language; and

Whereas, we understand that conservative members of the House may
try a variety of maneuvers to remove the transgender inclusive
language; and

Whereas, given the choice, the majority of the LGBT community would
rather wait and educate Congress on transgender issues than force a
vote on an exclusive ENDA; and

Whereas, lesbians and gay men have historically been left behind
with respect to civil rights and many understand the pain of
society's ignorance and fear towards transgender persons; and

Whereas, lesbians, gay men, bisexual and transgender people share
common interests and goals; and

Whereas, transgender people are more times affected by bigotry and
discrimination in employment, housing and other essential areas in
life and desperately need the protections ENDA would require;
therefore be it

Resolved, SDNYC, LID, GLID, JOLDC and LGDCQ strongly oppose new language in
ENDA that would not include transgender individuals and will not
support nor work towards the passage of such a bill; and

Resolved, the SDNYC, LID, GLID, JOLDC and LGDCQ strongly oppose bringing
any version of ENDA that is not inclusive of all members of the LGBT
community to the floor of Congress and voting upon it; and

Resolved, SDNYC, LID, GLID, JOLDC and LGDCQ call upon the HRC to either
clarify or change its position and oppose any and all efforts to pass
ENDA without transgender inclusive language; and

Resolved, SDNYC, LID, GLID, JOLDC and LGDCQ Congressman Frank's actions and
explanations on ENDA, and applauds Congresswoman Baldwin for removing
her name as sponsor; and

Resolved, SDNYC, LID, GLID, JOLDC and LGDCQ will send this resolution and
letters urging all New York City representatives in Congress to join
Congresswoman Baldwin and withhold their names from the bill.

The Resolution has passed.

Dear Friends:

Please mark your calendar for Thursday, May 31 for the Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City’s 21st Anniversary Celebration: “LEGAL TO VOTE, LEGAL TO DRINK, BUT NOT LEGAL TO MARRY…YET!” We hope you will join us for a cocktail reception, with a top-shelf open bar, plenty of food and a very few short speeches. Once again we will be at Via Restaurant and Lounge, 16 West 21 Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues), Manhattan, from 6–9:00 P.M. As you probably know from our last several events, this party will be a blast and will be attended by all the movers and shakers in LGBT politics and our wonderful straight allies.

Our honorees this year are four incredible New Yorkers (in alphabetical order):

U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke—Yvette is the newly elected member of Congress from the 11th C.D. in Brooklyn and has become one of the stars of the Class of 2007 in the new Democratic majority. She continues her incredible career in Washington, DC after serving for 5 years in the New York City Council in the 40th District. Her committee assignments are: Education and Labor, Homeland Security, and Small Business. She has been a great friend to Stonewall and to the LGBT community.

Assembly Member Deborah Glick—Deborah, the first openly lesbian or gay member of the New York Legislature, was elected to the 66th Assembly District, which includes includes Greenwich Village, Chelsea, SoHo and Tribeca, in 1990. She is chair of the Social Services Committee. We are proud to honor Deborah with the Lew Todd Community Service Award for her dedication, hard work, and commitment as a longtime activist in the women’s rights and LGBT rights movements.

Commissioner Alexander B. “Pete” Grannis—Pete was recently appointed by Governor Eliot Spitzer to be New York State’s Commissioner for the Department of Environmental Conservation. Before this appointment, Pete served in the New York State Assembly for 31 years, representing the 65th A.D. on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. For many years he served as chair of the Housing Committee and later as chair of the Insurance Committee. He has also been a consistent supporter of the LGBT community.

Dirk McCall—Dirk served as our president for the previous two years, having previously served as an officer and executive board member for many years. Under his strong leadership our membership rolls grew, our reputation as the leading LGBT political organization in the state solidified and we helped dozens of candidates and their campaigns (we also had more fun than any Democratic club in the City of New York). Dirk is also very active in Queens politics, making a huge difference in obtaining support for LGBT rights in what has traditionally been one of the more conservative parts of the City. We are very proud to honor our outgoing president, Dirk McCall.

We hope that you will join us as a Benefactor ($500), Patron ($250) or Sponsor ($150). Your names will be included in our invitation and program. (Regular tickets are $100). Your kind contributions will help us to support our candidates and to continue our fight for full equality, including, as the name of our event implies, working with Governor Spitzer to obtain full marriage rights in New York. Please complete the coupon below and mail it with your check or money order no later than Friday, May 4th if you wish to be included in our invitation (we will accept sponsorships for inclusion in our program, until May 28th). You may also pay via PayPal Below. For more information please contact Matthew Carlin at 917-292-4619 or mcarlin@sdnyc.org. Hi Everyone:

Our next general meeting is Wednesday, April 25th at 8:00pm at the LGBT Center, 208 W. 13th St. between 7th and Greenwich Aves. Our speakers will be NYC Comptroller William Thompson, Councilmember John Liu and from GLSEN Kevin Jennings. We are ending the meetings in time for social time, no later than 9:30. Our meetings are the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Our monthly social Drinking Liberally Steps Out, will be on Tuesday, April 17th from 7-10pm at XES Lounge 157 W 24th Street (between 6th & 7th Aves.). As always, drinks are 2-for-1 until 9:00. Please come out for some conversation and cocktails. We had a great group last month. (We meet every third Tuesday of the month.)

After the Jump are two invitations, one to the National Gay & Lesbian Taskforce (NGLTF) Annual Dinner (Mon. 4/16) and the other to the Gay Officer's Action League (GOAL) annual event, honoring our V.P. National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) Annual Event

Monday, April 16, 6-9:30:00PM at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

We’ll start with a cocktail reception and silent auction, and follow with dinner and an awards ceremony.

Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) and Steven Goldstein, Chair, Garden State Equality, are among the honorees of the event.

Past Leadership Award recipients include Rosie & Kelli O'Donnell, former South African President Nelson Mandela, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, Senator Ted Kennedy, former Senators Carol Moseley Braun and Tom Daschle, D.C. Black Pride, transgender activist Earline Budd, film producer Bruce Cohen, actors Wilson Cruz, Alec Mapa and Mathew St. Patrick, comedian Margaret Cho, and The Indigo Girls, to name only a few.

Better than all of this, every ticket bought for the event helps fund the work of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. I think the Task Force is one of the most important organizations in our community. In fact, founded in 1973, the Task Force was the first national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights and advocacy organization and remains the movement's leading voice for freedom, justice and equality. The Task Force works to build the grassroots political strength of our community from the ground up. Our contribution to the Leadership Awards will make sure they have the funds to continue training state and local activists and leaders, working to strengthen the infrastructure of state and local allies, and organizing broad-based campaigns to build public support for complete equality for LGBT people. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a world that respects and makes visible the diversity of human expression and identity where all people may fully participate in society.

Of course, the Task Force is a 501(c)(3) corporation incorporated in Washington, D.C. so your contribution will be tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.

General Admission is $300.

Follow This Link to visit my and, choose "Yes, I will join your Table" link to sit at the Stonewall Table.

Gay Officers Action League
25th Anniversary Awards Banquet

Celebrating 25 Years of Service to the Uniformed Service

Friday, April 20th, 2007
7 p.m. - 11 p.m.
Tavern on the GreenCentral Park at West 67th St.New York, NY 10023
Honoring
Governor Eliot Spitzer
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo
Kurland & Associates, P.C.
Carol Hunter

Tickets
Members $125.00
Non-Members $140.00

Please email Matthew Carlin at mcarlin@sdnyc.org if you'd like to be at Stonewall's table.

For more information visit www.goalny.org
