Stonewall Endorsements 2006
The 2006 Endorsement Meeting of the Stonewall Democratic Club of NYC was held June 8, 2006 at Housing Works on 13th Street. In a packed room, about 200 people voted in contested endorsement battles and we present the results below.
I wish to express my sincere gratitude to our Treasurer Joseph Hagelmann, III for his wonderful work at the door, his distribution and oversight of the ballots and his work on keeping our membership list in order. Without Joe we would not be in the great shape we are in. I also wish to thank my Vice Presidents, all of whom did great work. I thank Matt Carlin for his design of the ballot and his coordination of the program. He kept us running smoothly despite heated debate. I thank Alfonso Quiroz, Jr. for his compilation of our candidate questionnaires and his work with me in getting candidates lined up to speak at our many endorsement forums and all of his help in responding to their requests. I thank our Recording Secretary Mark Thompson for his work on these meetings as well. Additional thanks to Michael Gottlieb for working the check-in desk and to Vice President Joy Kallio for helping keep things running smoothly.
First, our most heated race of the night was the Attorney General primary. Congratulations to our endorsed candidate for AG, Sean Patrick Maloney. His victory was impressive and his candidacy is a strong testament to his character, tenacity and organizing abilities. Sean will be a wonderful Attorney General and I call upon every member of Stonewall to join together as we fight to ensure his victory. I am heartened that we are now on a team with the Empire State Pride Agenda and Lambda Independent Democrats, two of the most dynamic and wonderful political organizations in the LGBT community.
Also, incumbent Senator Martin Connor, a close friend of Stonewall for years, prevailed in a tightly contested race and we extend congratulations to him. We also continue to stand with our great friend and ally Senator John Sabini of Jackson Heights as he faces a primary battle. John Sabini has always stood by the LGBT community and we proudly stand by him in this fight. In the 63rd Assembly District, we have lined up behind one of the most dynamic and intelligent candidates we have ever met, Brian Kavanagh, who many of us met when he ran for City Council in the past against our endorsed candidate Rosie Mendez and as the former Chief of Staff to City Councilmember Gale Brewer. Brian is a true fighter and we are confident he will be one of the best legislators to serve in the State Legislature. Finally, Stonewall pledges to ensure the victory of Yvette Clarke in the 11th Congressional District Primary. This is our fourth endorsement of Yvette and we are incredibly happy to be a part of Team Clarke. Stonewall chose Housing Court Judge David Cohen for the 2nd District Slot. David is a longtime friend to our community and with such great candidates in this race, we are pleased to throw our support behind him.
We look forward to sweeping victories as we move toward the primary in September. Campaigns and Political Affairs Vice President Alfonso Quiroz will be in touch with all of you soon as we start to coordinate petitioning and work for our slate. I ask you to give generously of your time, your expertise and your financial support. Together we will elect pro-LGBT Democrats in NYC.
The full list of endorsed candidates is below - a list of priority races will be coming in the next week once the Executive Committee has had a chance to meet.
