Our History
The Stonewall Democratic Club of NYC was founded in 1986 by long time activists Lew Todd, Steve Ashkinazy, and Saul Fishman. Throughout its 20 year history, Stonewall has been at the forefront of supporting LGBT and LGBT friendly candidates for elected office.
Historically, the club has endorsed state committee and judicial candidates in all five boroughs, to Governor, to U.S. President.
The club has been instrumental with vital legislation including New York City’s Gay Rights bill, which was drafted by Saul Fishman. Throughout its 20 years, Stonewall has held forums on cutting edge issues, and remains a voice in legislation in NYC and the state.
Some of SDNYC's Success
In 1986 right after the passage of the gay rights law Intro 2 there was an amendment to exempt 1- 5 family homes from the law, weakening the law. Stonewall members convinced then Mayor Ed Koch to veto this bill. We then convinced council members to abstain instead of voting for a mayoral override thus making sure the law was not weakened.
Helped to organize the 1987 march on Washington.
Members organized a radio program on WBAI called Outlooks which was on the air for more than 8years.
Helped to organize the first hearing in the United States on Homeless People with Aids held by Andrew Stein. This hearing was then followed by state and congressional hearings, thus funding the first Ryan White monies.
Members organized the first meetings and coalition in the United States on Domestic Partnership in 1987 and had the first legislation on Domestic Partnership introduced into the NYC Council making it the first bill of it’s kind in the nation, and setting off a national trend.
Testified in favor of Domestic Partners to be included in rent control and stabilized laws.
Testified in 1987 against mandatory testing of pregnant women in NYC when the then chair, Joseph Lisa, introduced legislation.
Club members testified in favor of the Human Rights law 1991 which made the NYC law have more clout and dramatically expanding the law.
Wrote and passed the 1994 NYC law making bias related violence and harassment covered under the NYC Human Rights law, thus making it legal to sue for harassment and or violence under civil law.
Got then Mayor Dinkins to sign executive order setting up Domestic Partnership legislation.
Wrote the Human Rights Law Poster bill which would mandate that a poster explaining the Human Rights Law and how to use it both in 1994 and in 2002.
Wrote and passed the 1996 Smoking ban.
Got a Domestic Partnership law passed in the NYC Council codifying the executive order signed by former Mayor Dinkins.
Former President Christopher Lynn becomes the first openly gay Commissioner of Taxi and Limousine. Two years later Lynn became the first openly gay Commissioner of the DOT.
One of the founding members of the National Stonewall Democrats.
Became the first lgbt club in the nation and the first club in NYC to endorse Governor Howard Dean for the Presidential Democratic primary in 2003.
